Yes, many thanks for summing up the function modules and BAPI's.
Last week I made a similar solution with a webdynpro calling custom FM's and sending e-mails to the user.
I also made a check query which simply looks in the USR02 and ADR6 table to see if the BNAME and SMTP_ADR match with each other.
Finally after the confirmation URL has been opened from within the first e-mail a password generation BAPI is called and a new initial password is send back to the e-mail address of the user.
After that the user can simply use the CRMUI BSP to change their initial password into a new productive password.
Indeed quite strange that SAP has provided this "password forgotten" record in the custom logon URL's.
