maybe there's a different way to meet your requirement, but I wouldn't hesitate to enhance the UI component and to redefine the DO_CONFIG_DETERMINATION method. This is the entire meaning of redefinition 
I also don't think that you will get into trouble if you redefine the method. What is you concern regarding a system upgrade?
Otherwise, redefine this method and fulfill your mission
