, I believe the easiest way would be to use the FM I pointed before, dealing with BOL using conditions, as you already noticed, is a pain because doesn't follow the normal BOL/GENIL rules, but If you are enhancing the WebUI component or using a BADI which is in the WebUI layer we can consider my suggestion as not-best practice. If I was in you situation I would try to find an API BADI to use the FM there, otherwise you will suffer the condition curse. do you understand what I'm trying to explain?
