I'm not sure about that, but, Did you check the BADIs to handle the AET extension? The following link is to manage the rapid applications, but the BADI is the same, maybe is there a similar BADI to check fields behaviour
As I don't have a modern versión of CRM right now I can not see the code after the ELSE, but I believe the key is debugging that.
